We had the opportunity to meet with Peter Synan, a local historian and custodian of the only remaining Powder Magazine in Victoria. They were built by Government to store Black Powder that was used in muskets but more usually for blasting rock in the gold mines of the area.
They were made with thick, buttressed brick walls and vaulted brick ceilings (thin at the peak so any explosion would be directed upward). The thick wooden floors were constructed with wooden pegs rather than nails to reduce the risk of a spark.
