One of the earliest towns of the area was Wingham. It's position up the Manning River was decided by how far the trading boats could navigate inland. Some of the older buildings still remain around the central park.
Happily they have also preserved some of the original coastal forest in a reserve near the town. It is an area full of birds and bats and a large variety of vegetation accessed by a boardwalk.
The reserve fronts onto the Manning River where the original wharfs stood.
