One of the sad chapters in the history of Canberra was the day that bush fire tornados destroyed many parts of Canberra and surrounds. The famous Mt Stromlo Observatory was a victim of these terrible fires and it has not fully recovered.
The large telescope house only covers charred remains of the main telescope and its mount. Some of the other telescope buildings were totally destroyed. The site is perfect for an observatory, high on a hill some distance from the light pollution of Canberra.A sculpture commemorated the place of the Observatory as a communications hub during the moon landings. Our holiday was characterised by great lunches and smaller evening meals.
