Around Coolgardie

We took the day to have a look around Coolgardie and, to be frank, it did not take that long. In order to see the local landscape we headed for Gnarlbine rocks, about 30km south west. This was a large flat granite hillock surrounded by scrubby vegetation.
The boys did not find the flat rock that interesting, so a climb over the few small outcrops was required.
Near the town they have preserved the bush camp of one of the last local hermit/prospectors, Jack Carin who scratched a living searching for gold in the local area.  It was generally agreed that the accommodation was basic.
The Railway Museum was closed but we were able to see the old steam engine which impressed the boys more than the rocks.
We had a few laughs in Coolgardie, mainly provided by the Tourist Information Office.  They were able to tell us that there was not much to see around the town, that the lookout was not very good, and that a number of local attractions were closed for the holiday period - just when people might want to see them!  The maps provided showed attractions that did not exist and roads that did not exist.  All work in progress we suspect.  It's pretty  low key round here.
