We set up in Coolgardie which was where the gold rushes in the area originated. This is a town that is more about past glories than a vibrant present. The streets are wide and straight but there are few of the old buildings left.
Even so, I only found one derelict on the streets. On the other hand Kalgoorlie (40km down the road) is a thriving bustling city with evident wealth and community services. The reason for this wealth is just on the edge of the town. The huge open cut gold mine.
The contrast with Coolgardie could not be greater. There are even green parks around the town which have been set up to keep a reserve population of the local indigenous plants for replanting and reclamation. They make a good lunch spot.
Back at camp the aftermath of Easter is still evident as the last of the chocolate gets consumed.
