Heading North

We settled in for a day of travel heading north.  First stop was the amazing Black Mountain that is a massive pile of granite boulders covered in a mix of lichen and moss to appear black.  Formed nearly 2 million years ago by cooling lava with the covering washed away, it is a spectacular and dangerous place with shifting rocks and huge cracks and deep crevices.  The mountain is home to a couple of unique species including a toad that are found nowhere else.

Morning tea on the road.
At the Split Rock Reserve we heard of the life of the local indigenous people and saw a number of ancient rock paintings.
The first motor vehicle to make the journey to the tip of Cape York was an Austin 7 exactly like this one.
The landscape was changing with tall termite mounds and grass trees.
The overnight accommodation was at Musgrave Station where you had one option for the evening meal, steak.  However it was one of the best steaks we had ever tasted.  Their local water hole contained freshwater crocodiles.
