We settled in for a day of travel heading north. First stop was the amazing Black Mountain that is a massive pile of granite boulders covered in a mix of lichen and moss to appear black. Formed nearly 2 million years ago by cooling lava with the covering washed away, it is a spectacular and dangerous place with shifting rocks and huge cracks and deep crevices. The mountain is home to a couple of unique species including a toad that are found nowhere else.
Morning tea on the road.
At the Split Rock Reserve we heard of the life of the local indigenous people and saw a number of ancient rock paintings.
The first motor vehicle to make the journey to the tip of Cape York was an Austin 7 exactly like this one.The landscape was changing with tall termite mounds and grass trees.
