Lava Tubes

We took a morning walk to a lookout to see the surrounding country.

Then took the bus to see the tubes.  These are massive caverns left behind after the molten larva flowed over the base basalt melting a channel.  A roof forms as the larva cools but the molten rock continues on and finally exits the tube it formed over the landscape.  There is over 100 miles of tube that can only be accessed when the roof collapses in so much of the length of the tubes remains unexplored.
We took the afternoon to see the Kalkani extinct volcano, climbing to the rim to see the caldera.
For our evening meal we chose an old railway carriage (that had a view of our cabin out the window) as protection from the kookaburras.
